Hawk Rodeo Team Gets Good Start on Season

BIG SPRING – The Hawk Rodeo Team started off their fall rodeo season in strong fashion with several placing in the top ranks as they competed at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales NM, September 22-24, 2011.

Leading the ladies team was sophomore returner and 2011 CNFR competitor Kaci Smith from Pervis, MS.  Smith finished the weekend with a second place finish in the barrel racing after a 17.69 run in the long round and a 17.41 in the short go for an average score of 35.1.

Teammate Page Woodward, found her way to the short round in goat tying after nailing a 9.2 and 9.1 in the long and short rounds respectively. The 18.3 in the average was enough for a 6th place finish.

“Kaci had a good opening weekend,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College Rodeo Coach.  “I look for several of our other ladies to be tough competitors as well as we get rolling through our fall season.”

The men’s team had their own level of success being led by freshman newcomer Lane Siggins who placed second in the steer wrestling competition.

Siggins lined up with the quick and strong bringing down a 5.30 in the long round, a 5.60 in the short round, which secured a 10.9 average and second place.

K.C. Fryar, another sophomore returner for the Hawks, followed in right behind teammate Siggins with an 11.2 average score and the third place finish in steer wrestling.

Bull rider Justin Anderson held on for 8 in both the long and short rounds.  He had a lower score of 56 in the long round but came back strong as one of only two cowboys to hold on in the short round. His score of 77 was enough to secure the second place finish for the weekend.

Calf ropers were not to be left out of the places as Dylan Hammons took home the fourth place finish.

“I thought this was a great start in our fall season for both the ladies and men’s teams,” said Kernick.  “It’s always good to get out of the gate strong and lay a solid foundation to build on and both of our teams did that this weekend.”

After getting the first rodeo behind them, the Hawk rodeo teams will continue working through their fall schedule by competing next at Sul Ross State University on September 29 – October 1 in Alpine, Tx.
