Hawk Rodeo Team Sees Action at Vernon College

BIG SPRING – The Hawk Rodeo Team continued their fall rodeo season with three student athletes finishing strong as they competed at Vernon College in Vernon, Texas, October 6-8, 2011.

Mecca Hickox was shining for the ladies team as she finished .01 seconds out of first place in the barrel race competition. Hickox had a 17.09 long round and followed that with a solid 17.02 short go which was enough for first place in the round. Her average of 34.11 secured her second place finish for the weekend.

Teammate Jenna Price landed in the short round in goat tying after a 9.3 and 9.6 in the long and short rounds respectively. Her 18.9 average score was good enough for a third place finish.

“Mecca had a great weekend,” said Greg Kernick, Howard College Rodeo Coach.  “Anytime you’re just .01 seconds out of first place you can’t complain.”

The men’s team struggled through the weekend but brothers and team roping partners Josh and Lane Siggins pulled through and found themselves in fourth place at the end of the day.

Josh, a returning sophomore and CNFR qualifier, has partnered up with his brother Lane, a freshman, both from Ruidoso, NM. The brother duo nailed a 6.30 in their long round landing solidly in second place for the round.

The short round wasn’t as smooth but the 11.8 was still good enough to secure a fourth place finish in the round and the average.

“This wasn’t necessarily the kind of weekend we were looking for,” said Kernick.  “But you take what you get and build from there every week.  We’ll practice and work hard to be ready to get back on again next week.”

The Hawk rodeo teams will continue working through their fall schedule by competing next at Frank Phillips College Rodeo in Perryton, Tx, October 13th-15th.
