Hawk Rodeo Finishes Fall Season / Standings

BIG SPRING – The Hawk Rodeo Team was back on top in several events as they competed at the Texas Tech University rodeo in Lubbock, Texas, October 20-22, 2011 finishing out their fall season.

Kaci Smith was doing her job in the barrel racing as she went 16.29 in the long round, and a blistering 15.98 in the short, which was enough for a first place finish in the round and a 32.27 average and the first place finish for the weekend.

Mecca Hickox continued her winning ways coming in 6th place after 16.28 and 16.39 in the long and short rounds respectively, bringing her average in at 32.65. Teammate Tyrney Steinhoff rounded out the trio in barrels as she went 16.33 in the long, 16.94 in the short and finished with a 33.27 average and eighth place.

“It’s good to see these ladies bringing home the win,” said Greg Kernick, Hawk rodeo head coach. “Kaci and Mecca have been finishing strong for the last several weeks and I hope to see that continue in the spring.”

The steer wrestling competition also proved to be successful for Hawk Rodeo as Cullen Teller and KC Fryar both finished at the top of the heap.

Teller, a sophomore returner from Maricopa, AZ went 5.0 in the long and came back in the short round with a solid 4.2 which gave him first place in the round and a 9.2 average and second place finish for the weekend.

Fryar, also a returner for the Hawks, had the 4th best time in the long round with 4.6 but brought down a 5.5 in the short. The 10.1 average was still good enough for a 3 way tie for fourth place.

Josh Siggins managed to find himself in the short round of the calf toping after his 9.8 in the long round but wasn’t able to finish the job due to a no time in the short. Teammate Trey Moore almost found himself in the same situation after a 71 point bareback ride gave him fourth place in the long. However, a no time in the short still left him with a sixth place finish in the average for the weekend.

The team roping duo of Katey Anthony and Dayton Adams were on fire in the long round after their 6.6 time gave them the second place finish for the round. But after some tough luck and a no time in the short, the duo finished off their weekend with a sixth place finish in the average.

“We saw some really good things happen this weekend as we finished off our fall season,” said Kernick.  “We just have to continue to work hard over the next several weeks and be prepared to come in the spring season and perform the way I know we can. We have a lot of potential just waiting to bust out.”

As the Hawk rodeo teams have finished their fall season, they will pick up again in the spring by competing at the Weatherford College Rodeo in Weatherford, Tx, March 1st-3rd.
