Overton Receives State Award

BIG SPRING –  John Overton, Howard College head athletic trainer, recently received the Truman Spoon Exemplary Service Award at the Davis Mountain Sports Medicine Symposium.

L to R: Dawn Allen, Truman Spoon, John OvertonThe award, named after Truman Spoon, a retired athletic trainer, was created to recognize an athletic trainer in the State of Texas that has made significant contributions to the athletic training profession in the roles of service, leadership, and camaraderie.

“We are very proud of John upon his receipt of this special award,” said Dr. Cheryl T. Sparks, President of Howard College. “We have always known that he goes above and beyond in his work with our athletic programs and students but it is nice to see him get statewide recognition for his efforts.”

In order to be considered for the award, an athletic trainer must be nominated by one of his/her peers and then an awards committee votes on the final selection.

Dawn Allen, athletic trainer at Leander ISD, has first hand knowledge of Overton’s experience and qualifications and was confident he would be selected for the award.

“John is an educator who has taught many students over the years to become not only athletic trainers, but productive citizens and workers in many professions,” said Allen. “His commitment to ensuring that the athletes in his care get the best possible treatment is second to none. He will go above and beyond to take care of all his athletes from ball players to bull riders.”

Overton initiated the annual Everett Blackburn Rockin’ Rodeo Clinic that is held in conjunction with the Howard College Hawk rodeo each year. The clinic gives area athletic trainers and students the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and skills in new techniques in the profession while earning CEUs.

Overton not only takes care of the Hawk student athletes but also volunteers time at area high schools and his local church.

“John truly exemplifies the Truman Spoon Award,” added Allen. “He is humble, self-sacrificing and dedicated to promoting health and wellness in all athletes and the profession of athletic training.”
