John Overton is a veteran of the athletic training profession. He can finally say that he has found the perfect job. “I love the interaction with the students, I love being able to influence a young person’s life and help them get started on their college education.” The best day for me is when they walk the stage and graduate from Howard College.
As an assistant professor, John teaches in the physical education department, supervises 14 student athletic trainers, the student athletic training / sports medicine program, and coordinates the college sponsored prevention and care of athletic injuries outreach program to area public school districts. He also serves as the supervisor to the athletic department scholarship book program. He has also been named the Dorothy Garrett coliseum director in August of 2018.John has also served two terms with the Texas State Athletic Trainers Association.
John Overton was born in Big Spring, Texas. He grew-up and attended Coahoma High School. He received his associates of science degree from Howard College. He then went on to receive a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Texas at Arlington. Overton then received a Masters of Education degree from Tarleton State University. Overton is married to another Howard College Graduate, Amy. They have two girls Makayla and MaKynlee.
As Howard College’s athletic trainer he has made some dramatic changes to the Everett Blackburn sports medicine facility. Through the cooperation of many outstanding people we have been able to expand the training room to house a connected wet area and we were able to add a rehab room. Overton says, “That he is not doing anything new, he is just building on the tradition that Howard College already had in place”. Overton’s student athletic trainers continue to cover all of the sports that HC has to offer including rodeo. Overton states, “I am just so proud to come back to Big Spring and work in a place that is home. HC is just a great place to work or go to school. This area is just a great place to raise a family.”
Overton is licensed by the State Of Texas as an Athletic Trainer. He is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, The South West Athletic Trainers Association, The Texas State Athletic Trainers Association, and the Texas Community College Teachers Association, College Athletic Trainers Society.
