1st Half Rodeo Rewind

As of February 12, 2025, the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) Southwest Region has wrapped up an action-packed fall season, setting the stage for an intense and highly competitive spring run. With the first half of the season in the books, teams and individuals across the region are gearing up for a thrilling push toward the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR).

The fall schedule featured rodeos hosted by Eastern New Mexico University, Sul Ross State University, Clarendon College, Texas Tech University, and Vernon College. These early-season battles showcased the raw talent and grit of Southwest Region cowboys and cowgirls.

To no one's surprise, Tarleton State University holds firm at the top of both the men's and women's Southwest Region standings. The TSU men have racked up 2,440 points, while the women's team leads with 1,380 points, proving once again that Tarleton is the team to beat.

Meanwhile, Howard College's men's team sits at 13th Overall with 305 points, eager to make up ground in the second half of the season. Though the overall standings don't quite reflect the level of individual talent on the Hawks' roster, Howard has some strong contenders making waves—especially in the Team Roping Heeler event.

Brogan Rankin is currently tied for 6th place with 150 points, and Jeryn Ellerd sits right behind him in 9th with 140 points. Both competitors have shown the kind of consistency that could pay off in a big way down the stretch. With a little late-season magic, they could be punching their tickets to the CNFR.

Looking ahead, the spring schedule promises even more fireworks with stops at Odessa College (Feb. 27–March 1), Ranger College (March 27–29), Western Texas College (April 3–5), Howard College (April 10–12), and Tarleton State University (April 24–26). Every point will matter as teams fight for regional dominance.

The Southwest Region is as tough as they come, but that's what makes it exciting. With only a few rodeos left before the season wraps, expect fierce competition, thrilling performances, and maybe even a surprise or two along the way. One thing's for sure—this season is far from over.
