Howard College Lady Hawks Fall to South Plains Lady Texans in 83–76 Conference Battle
The Howard College Lady Hawks battled tough Monday night against the South Plains Lady Texans but ultimately came up short in a hard-fought WJCAC matchup, falling 76–83.
In a fast-paced contest, both teams traded baskets early and the Lady Hawks stayed within striking distance throughout the first half. Howard College showed resilience with timely defense and opportunistic scoring, keeping the game close at every turn.
South Plains eventually built a lead in the second half. The Lady Hawks answered with a late push, but could not complete the comeback as time expired.
"We played good two out of four quarters. On the road you have to be good at least 3 quarters to give yourself a chance to win. South Plains is a physical team, and I don't think we matched it well. We still have a chance to finish second in conference and also, I want us to win our last home game for KB. She is a major part of our turnaround with this program and I want to end her last regular season at Howard with a win," said Head Coach Al Davis.
Offensively, the Lady Hawks were led by Makayla Ellison, who finished with 25 points and chipped in 9 rebounds and 3 assists. Aubre Pox provided a spark with 17 points, while Kailyn Berry added 9 points and contributed under the basket on the defensive end with 9 total defensive rebounds.
Howard College shot 35% from the field, 31% from beyond the arc and 81% at the free-throw line. The Lady Hawks also forced 14 South Plains turnovers, converting those into key scoring opportunities throughout the contest.
Defensively, Howard battled hard, securing 31 rebounds and fighting for every loose ball. Despite the loss, the Lady Hawks showed grit and teamwork that will serve them well as they continue conference play.
The Lady Hawks will look to bounce back as they prepare to face Midland College at HOME on Thursday, March 5 at 5:45 pm. Prior to the game, we will recognize Sophomore Kailyn Berry for her contributions to the team.
