Conference play is in full swing, and the Hawks are hitting hard in the first week of play. To close out the first week of action, the Howard College Hawks defeated New Mexico Military Institute with a 104-69 final.
The red and black went into halftime with a 45-31 lead over the Broncos. The second half saw an additional 59 points added for the Hawks and 38 for the home team.
As a team, Howard College finished 66% from the field, 47.6% from the three and 82.4% from the line. The Hawks totaled five blocked shots and seven steals.
Terry Copeland was the leading scorer for the Hawks with 17 points across 26 minutes, going 6-6 from the field, 1-1 from the three, 4-4 from the line and five rebounds.
Kuai Deng had his best game yet with 15 points at 60% from the field and 50% from the three and from the charity stripe. Deng added two steals and a blocked shot for the Hawks.
Daniel Culberson also had a great game, contributing 14 points at 5-8 from the field, 1-3 from the three and a perfect 3-3 from the line. Culberson led the team with seven rebounds and three steals.
Brandon Ivery also had a nice outing with 13 points at 5-6 from the field, 1-1 from the three and 2-2 from the line.
Dace Pleasant and Victor Yimga Moukouri each made double digit contributions with Pleasant totaling 12 points and Moukouri adding 11. Pleasant went 2-3 from the field, 1-2 from the three and 7-7 from the line with six rebounds and a steal. Moukouri finished 4-7 from the field, 2-5 from the three and 1-1 from the line.
The win over the Broncos brought the Hawks to a 15-1 overall record and a 2-0 record in conference play.
Next up for Howard College is a meeting with New Mexico Junior College on Jan. 12. The Hawks will host NMJC with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off in the Dorothy Garrett Coliseum.
